The consumption of electric power inside a mine is reduced to a minimum for safety and economical measures, therefore it doesn't exist a lighting system. In past times the miners used oil lamps that produced little light and a lot of smoke.

Later on they begun using carbide lamps called" acetylene lamps". They contains in the lower part calcium carbide and in the upper part water, the contact among the two substances produces a gas: the acetylene, from whose combustion the best possible lighting for an underground environment is obtained.

Currently the miners are equipped with frontal lamps to fix on the helmet.
