The core barrel, too, is equipped with an air compressed engine. It was used to drill or to locate talc layers. A system of empty poles, with a diamond or widia points, the "artificial diamond", is inserted into the rock thanks to a rotating system.

As the rods go through the rock layers they take inside a sample of the material they had crossed, "the carrot". When extracting rods and carrot the depth and wideness of the layer can be determined.
