Italians and Australia prior to 1900

The first Italians came to Australia in 1770 followed by a more significant contingent in the 1850s as a result of the gold rush. Amongst those who settled in Australia in the second half of the 19th century there were a number of highly educated and cultured professionals. These were the first to make a permanent contribution to Australian society and would be followed by the mass migration of the 1950s and 1960s.
