The Museum has five stables, which house four pit ponies and the Museum's Shire horse. With the exception of the Shire horse, the ponies all worked underground for some part of their lives. They are now enjoying a well-earned retirement!

Carl is a White Welsh Pony of just over 1.2 m height (12 hands and 2 inches). He was born in 1977 and worked underground for twelve years at Ellington Colliery, Northumberland, doing reclamation and salvage work. Carl came to live at the NCMME in 1994 and is believed to be the last pony to have worked in a mine in England. He is very mischievous and very attached to Colonel. He performed before the Royal Family at Windsor.
