Ponies are adaptable creatures. It is all the same to them whether the road is straight or whether it bends. They can go along a busy road or they can go to isolated places away from the main roads. A fault in the strata will not upset them but it may mean that mechanised haulage temporarily cannot be used. All a pony needs is a driver.

This was the most important person in a pit pony's life. These lads drove the ponies from their stables to work, and fed and watered them during the working shift. It was their duty to report both to the official they worked under and to the horsekeeper any accident that happened to the pony, or any matter that affected its well-being. The manager or under-manager had also to be informed.
