During the various miners' strikes many individuals became important figureheads, fighting for the miners' cause. Some miners' leaders, such as A. J. Cook, were even commemorated on Union banners, with labour leaders of the day. One problem with this was that, if a leader fell out of favour with a local union branch, they may well find their image painted over on the banner for a more acceptable face.

During the 1984/5 strike Arthur Scargill, who was the President of the National Union of Mineworkers, was one of the main figures fighting for justice for miners. He appears on several recent banners in the Yorkshire area.
