One of the main reasons why miners went on strike was to fight for a fair wage. One facet of the 1972 campaign was the demand for a wage increase. Although the mines were producing more coal, miners' wages were dropping compared with other jobs in the country. The government was trying to keep wage increases to a minimum across all industry and was initially not prepared to meet their demands. Striking miners tried to gain as much support as they could in order to try and win their cause. Leaflets like this one were produced by the National Union of Mineworkers. The more public support the miners had, the more chance they had of winning.
