From the control room, the controller would check the running of all the major underground conveyors and pumps. The control room is the main centre from where all the underground machines are monitored. They would be watched by a man who would be permanently based in the control room, and his job included finding out what the problem was if any of the conveyor belts for carrying coal were standing idle.
