The miners' unions have played a very important role within the coal mining industry since the eighteenth century and continue to do so today. The unions were interested in protecting the wages and conditions for the working miner, and have fought for better conditions within both the privately-owned and state-owned industry.

The National Union of Mineworkers was established after the war, following on from the Miners' Federation of Great Britain. In recent years the NUM has been campaigning against the closure of pits and for compensation for miners injured through their work. This health aspect of the Union's work has seen miners gain compensation for industrial deafness and vibration white finger. The Museum has many NUM related items, especially those produced to gain support for the miners during strikes, such as this poster.
