The North and South Staffordshire coalfields were seen as very rich in Europe because of the variety and number of coal seams. Staffordshire was also known for its thick coal, although most of this had been worked out by the twentieth century.
These coalfields were also known for their geological faults and some of these faults dipped so steeply that they were almost vertical. These faults helped to contribute to the development of horizon mining, which is used to work highly inclined seams.
