The South-West England coalfield is made up of the Bristol, Somerset and Forest of Dean areas. The Bristol and Somerset coalfields have been mined since the thirteenth century. The last collieries to remain open in these coalfields were Kilmersdon and Writhlington which were closed down in the early 1970s. The coal extracted from these coalfields have mainly been used for house, gas, cooking, manufacturing and steam coals.
