The Kent Coalfield lies in south-east England. This coalfield was the last English coalfield to be developed before the 1970s Selby project. The first coal was extracted in 1912 and the reason the coal remained untouched for so long was because it lies within a completely concealed coalfield hidden beneath more than 300 metres of rock with no indication on the surface of its existence. The small size of the coalfield and its difficult location limited its coal production to only one percent of the national total.
