The Hartley colliery disaster of 1862 led to important legislation which affected coal mines throughout the country. Two hundred and four men and boys were killed at the Durham colliery when a pumping engine beam fell down the only shaft, trapping the workers without ventilation. This led to an Act of Parliament requiring mines to have two means of exit.
