The annual Durham Miners' Gala has been taking place since 1871. At these meetings, miners and their families, from both Durham and the rest of the country, have demonstrated their support for the Union by coming together. Leading political figures of the day commented on the major issues affecting the coal mining industry from the platform at the Durham Gala.
At these annual demonstrations, which also took place in other areas, miners and their families march with their trade union banners through the city of Durham to the sound of brass bands.
