The Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and North Derbyshire coalfields geologically form the largest coalfield in England. It is believed that coal was first mined in these areas during Roman times but continued to be relatively small scale in size until the late-nineteenth and early twentieth century when larger parts of the coalfield were exploited. This made it one of the most dominant coalfields in England. The area continued to remain important throughout the twentieth century, with collieries remaining open within Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire into the twenty-first century.
