A number of Scottish collieries were considered sufficiently important to be worthy of preservation. This mine, Barony Colliery, was given statutory protection by being listed as a historic building by Historic Scotland. However, it was not possible to save the oldest and most interesting part of the colliery, almost all of which was demolished in the 1990s.
The physical remains of the coal industry were cleared away throughout central Scotland in a similar way, and now it is often impossible to see where coal mining occurred.
