The name "Oneta" comes from the Latin "alnetum" or "alneta" and means "aldern wood". The Municipality of Oneta is located in the upper part of the "Valle del Riso", 32 kilometers far from Bergamo; its surface is 18,26 square kilometers and its population is 721. The coat of arms of the Municipality reflects its mining tradition: in fact it consists of three green mountains under a blue sky, with a corss on the central peak and a silver miner's lamp. The richness of the Oneta subsoil is an important element, that influenced from the ancient times its life and its social and economic development.
